Letters from Guatemala

The Guilford Rotary Club has for the past three years sent money to a Rotary Club in Guatemala to support three students to attend school in a near-by town.  There is no school where they live, so they need transportation, tuition, shoes and clothes to attend school.  Shown below is a letter from each of the three students.  The stationery is hand-made;  the message is written on the front and a picture appears on the back.

Guilford Rotary's Dictionary Project

Guilford Rotary, as part of Rotary International emphasis on literacy, is going to provide each third-grader in Guilford schools with a personal dictionary for them to keep and use.  To raise money for this project, we have started a raffle at each of our Wednesday meetings.  Three raffle tickets are drawn;  those with the winning numbers draw from a deck of cards.  If someone draws the King of Clubs (because Rotary is the King of Clubs), that person wins one-half of the monies that have been collected to date.  If no one draws the King of Clubs, the cards drawn are discarded and next week the drawing is from a deck that is three cards less.  One time we had a drawing where there were only 4 cards left in the deck--we were undecided what would happen if no one drew the King of Clubs, but fortunately someone did so we did not have to face the problem of having a single card which was the King of Clubs.

On November 2, 2005, Justin Wyatt drew the King of Clubs and won $63.  Justin, recognizing that the Guilford Rotary's Senior Luncheon, which Al Jacobs has been organizing for 24 years, was a worthy project, donated the entire amount to the Senior Luncheon.  Shown at right  is Justin giving the money to Past President Donald Baechler.  Click on the picture for a full size picture, then use your browser's back button to return to this page.
