THE GUILFORD ROTARY CLUB
MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL FUND, INC
GUILFORD, CONNECTICUT
WHAT WE ARE...
Founded in 1966, the Fund was incorporated as a
non-profit, tax free organization by the members of the Guilford Rotary Club to provide
grants and loans for educational aid to deserving Guilford residents of any age, race,
creed, color, sex, etc. These would be allotted to individuals as an interest
free loan and would be re-payable upon completion of the education for which it was
given.
The Guilford Rotary Club Memorial Educational Fund,
Inc. has always considered SERVICE to the community as one of its prime objectives.
One way to foster this ideal is to recognize personal growth in character and
development, a sincere development in concern for fellow citizens and positive improvement
in academic achievement.
WHO IS A POTENTIAL RECIPIENT?...
The intended recipient for such a loan might be:
1. A potential night or trade school student
2. A college or high school student who wishes to
continue his or her education.
3. A blind person needing Braille instruction.
4. A widow suddenly needing ability and training
to find employment.
5. Most any Guilford resident looking
to forward
his or her education and/or training.
The Fund feels that the recipient for this grant should
have a Potential for Leadership. The Fund does not want to overlook anyone who has
demonstrated leadership. On the other hand, it does want to emphasize its desire to
encourage the development of potential leadership qualities possessed by anyone who may be
labeled a "doer" and not now identified as a leader.
The recipient should exhibit a genuine concern for
the well being of others. Since SERVICE to others is the basic cornerstone of
Rotary, the Fund considers this quality of concern for others as an important attribute.
The recipient should be able to demonstrate an ability
to deal positively with adversity. The Fund feels that adversity takes several
forms-some examples are financial hardships at home, physical and mental handicaps, family
tragedy, personal disappointments, etc.
While it is the hope of this Fund that all candidates
considered for this grant will exhibit the above characteristics, it is understood that no
one candidate is likely to be outstanding in all of the above areas.
HOW DOES THE FUND WORK?...
Money received through fund raisers, donations, gifts,
etc. is invested at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Their objective
is to prudently invest all principal sums and disperse only income collected from
investments. In addition, a gift may be given directly for distribution. Loans
that have been re-paid may also be used to grant additional loans. The Board of
Directors is restricted from any action which would endanger the "principal
sum" or the perpetuity of this Fund.
In addition, the Board of Directors encourages
YOU to make a living gift. For example, appreciated securities, held for more than
one year, make ideal gifts for those who find themselves locked in because of
costly Capital Gains situation. Life
insurance can be an inexpensive way to give a gift. A
pledge over several years could be used as a way to support the Fund while using it as a
vehicle for Tax and Estate Planning.
The Guilford Rotary Club Memorial Educational Fund,
Inc. is approved and eligible to receive gifts and bequests as tax-deductible
contributions.
The Board of Directors will be happy to discuss these
and other methods of charitable giving with you. If
you would care to assist the Fund in making an Investment in this Future of
Humanity, your contribution would be greatly appreciated.
